Let’s look at the following passage of scripture, as we begin our discussion on your thought life.
for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,(2 Corinthians 10:4-5)
This often quoted passage of God’s Word exhorts us to take every thought captive that contradicts the Word of God. It must be important to guard our thoughts if the Bible recommends it. But why does the Bible teach that? That’s the question I want to answer in this short post.
Notice the passage also contains the word stronghold. In our focus on this passage, I want us to remember two things. One a stronghold can lock a person in or out. Two the reason we are to take each thought captive that is contrary to the Word of God is so that a stronghold is not created.
Simple truth is many Christians are born again, love God, but are in bondage to strongholds in their lives. These strongholds in most cases are the result of trauma. Trauma that in some cases stretches back decades. They may have thought they were over it, but the truth is it still affects every part of their lives.
How can that be if they are born again? Doesn’t the blood wash away the past? It does. We are completely forgiven by blood. The Bible teaches that clearly. The thing we most often ignore though is that we need to have our minds renewed once we are born again. See Romans 12:1-2.
When we fail to renew our minds, we allow the past to keep us in bondage and we block out the future God has for us. Let me explain this by first looking at the way our brains work.
The human brain is a miracle. I believe it was divinely created by God to be the bridge that binds the natural and supernatural. It allows us to function in both realms so to speak. It’s a wonderful machine designed to operate in such a way as to keep us fit mentally and spiritually.
It operated just like that in Adam and Eve until Adam sinned and man was lost. It was then that satan began the famous battle of the mind. It’s a war that has raged ever since,
To make a long story short. Our brains have different areas. One of those is Thalamus. It is responsible for fight or flight. It in essence responds to stimuli.
We also have an area of the brain called the amygdala. This part of the brains forms an emotional response and lays down memories in response to what the thalamus is telling it. This my friend is where a stronghold occurs.
In traumatic times the brain goes into protective mode and without the governing principles of the Word of God, it can make bad decisions. The amazing thing is this. Down through the years, any stimuli that reminds the brain of that trauma will get the same response.
Triggers that bring the negative response may go unnoticed by the person. It is the brain that is doing the thinking! For this reason, many people who suffer with strongholds in the mind don’t know why they are the way they are. They just fee lost in a sea of toxic emotions.
Now you see why those who were abused by a parent or raped exhibit trust issues in every facet of their life. Now you understand why some people have certain fears that seem unexplainable to the naked eye. Though they make perfect sense to the one suffering with the fear.
Psychologists call this fixation or arrested development. It is absolutely a fact that a person can be one age physically and many years younger in one aspect of their psyche because the brain’s development was fixated at a time of trauma in their life.
How can you break out of the strongholds that are holding you back? Take advantage of the Word of God and brain chemistry! A thought life has a half life of fourteen days. Meaning a stronghold or a good thought pattern will fight to reinforce itself every fourteen days.
You and I must ask the Holy Spirit where the stronghold/lie is that the enemy has worked into our lives. Then ask Him for the Truth. He will illuminate your heart to the Word of God. Lastly, reinforce that truth.
Don’t do this for three days and stop. Be consistent! The beautiful part of all of this is the brain contains special neuron called glial cells. They clean up old memories. God has hard wired the brain to help you renew the mind!
As you renew your mind and replace lies with truth, the brain sends these cells to clean up old memories. Practice the discipline of renewing the mind on a consistent basis and before you know it your life will be radically changed.
